To foster worship. Isn't that the role of everything in a worship service? -

Thu, June 21, 2007 - 9:00 AMTo foster worship is a good answer, though it moves the question back one step: how does preaching foster worship? What manner of preaching best fosters it?
Preaching changed dramatically during the Reformation. For many, it became the highlight of worship, the focal point of a worship service, something it had not been in the Orthodox and Catholic churches. -

Re: Speaking of the Reformation...
Thu, June 21, 2007 - 11:11 AMFelix Adler, who founded the Ethical Culture movement, said that preaching should remind us of what we're already called to and then call us to the next step, and it should give us encouragement--or maybe that's what he said about worship itself, I forget. But it sounds like a good guideline to me, in any event.
As a Spiritual Humanist, I consider living faithfully to my calling to qualify as worship--24/7 worship, that is. -

My answer (paraphrased) was that leaving a church, chapel, mosque or temple with a sense of Love, Peace, Brotherhood and Charity is an indication of 'completion' to me.
I don't attend collective worship. But when I did, on the opposite side of the negative experience was a feeling of connectiveness that I had only experienced otherwise at music concerts, Even if the music was not my particual 'favorite', there was a definite energy drawn from the crowd that I appreciate would benefit many people.
It's too unfortunate that the 'speaker' can ruin such an experience.
